COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Southern Choctaw Elementary School counseling and guidance program is to prepare every student socially, academically, and emotionally for present and future challenges. Students are provided with opportunities to gain an understanding of self and others, to participate in educational and occupational exploration, and to pursue career opportunities in an environment that is safe, caring, and encouraging. The counselor works in collaborative partnerships with students, educators, parents, and community members to empower students to reach their highest level as productive members of society.
The comprehensive counseling and guidance program provided by the counselor at Southern Choctaw Elementary School is based on the following tenets:
1. Every student has the right to experience respect and dignity as a human being and to benefit from the counseling
and guidance services as described in the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance State Model for Alabama Public Schools (the State Plan), Bulletin 2003, No. 89.
2. Every student has the right to participate in activities that promote self-direction and self-development.
3. Every student has the right to make choices and to accept responsibility for the choices made.
4. Every student has the right to participate in a comprehensive school counseling and guidance program designed to assist all students in attaining their maximum potential in academic, career, and personal/social development.
The comprehensive school counseling and guidance program is an essential integrated component of the total instructional program through which students have maximum opportunity for academic, career, and personal/social development. In this regard, the school counseling and guidance program involves a planned, purposeful, and sequential program of activities that begins in Kindergarten and continues through the sixth grade. Comprehensive school counseling and guidance programs are data-driven by student needs and provide outcome-based accountability measures that align the school counseling and guidance program with the school's overall academic mission.

Information about Storia:
This is a tool that connects the school and home to keep parents informed of their child's progress toward Accelerated Reader and encourages the child to practice reading at home. You can view your child's progress toward reading goals and view all books your child has read and quizzes your child has taken. The same login and password that your child uses at school will work at home.
The library is in full swing and our Accelerated Reader program is up and running at SCES. Students have access to over 100,000 AR tests on the Accelerated Reader Enterprise system. The AR system is web-based which means as long as there is internet at SCES, AR will be up and running.
Students are encouraged to read, read, and read! The top reader in each classroom will be treated with a special prize!
Our students are being STAR tested now and will have a new*reading zone* or ZPD. Students should be reading books in their reading zone. Ask your child what his/her reading level is. If they do not know, please call me here at school and I will send you a full STAR report on your child. Please encourage your child/children to read. If a child can read, they will excel in school. If you have any motivational ideas, please share them with your child*s teacher or with me. Please call or visit as we are always open to new and innovative ideas and suggestions for making our students exceptional readers.
