COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Southern Choctaw Elementary School counseling and guidance program is to prepare every student socially, academically, and emotionally for present and future challenges. Students are provided with opportunities to gain an understanding of self and others, to participate in educational and occupational exploration, and to pursue career opportunities in an environment that is safe, caring, and encouraging. The counselor works in collaborative partnerships with students, educators, parents, and community members to empower students to reach their highest level as productive members of society.
The comprehensive counseling and guidance program provided by the counselor at Southern Choctaw Elementary School is based on the following tenets:

  1. Every student has the right to experience respect and dignity as a human being and to benefit from the counseling

and guidance services as described in the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance State Model for Alabama Public Schools (the State Plan), Bulletin 2003, No. 89.
  2. Every student has the right to participate in activities that promote self-direction and self-development.
  3. Every student has the right to make choices and to accept responsibility for the choices made.
  4. Every student has the right to participate in a comprehensive school counseling and guidance program designed to assist all students in attaining their maximum potential in academic, career, and personal/social development.

The comprehensive school counseling and guidance program is an essential integrated component of the total instructional program through which students have maximum opportunity for academic, career, and personal/social development. In this regard, the school counseling and guidance program involves a planned, purposeful, and sequential program of activities that begins in Kindergarten and continues through the sixth grade. Comprehensive school counseling and guidance programs are data-driven by student needs and provide outcome-based accountability measures that align the school counseling and guidance program with the school's overall academic mission.

THE LIBRARY NOOK

  • Storia

New this year is Storia. This is a free downloadable children’s eReading app and eBook system that grows with your children from toddlers to teens and helps them learn and love to read in a fun, educational and engaging way. Storia can be downloaded free at

     www.scholastic.com/storia.

    Information about Storia:

    • Storia comes from Scholastic – the people who know how children read and learn. The editors at Scholastic carefully curate a wide selection of eBooks so that every child can find just the right book for his or her reading level and interest.
    • Storia is safe and easy to use and is available for PC and iPad; availability on Android tablets, iPhones, and Android phones later this year.
    • Storia offers carefully selected, quality books that kids love to read in an eReading experience tailored to children’s age and reading level.
    • Storia helps kids learn and interact with books containing key features designed to support their reading and fuel engagement.
    • Storia offers enriched eBooks that feature audio narration, pronunciation tools, phonics, and vocabulary activities. These key features help emerging readers develop reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Older, established readers can take notes, highlight text, and access videos that offer real-world context for book topics.
    • Storia features Pronunciation tools and leveled children’s dictionaries, notes and highlighter. The Smart Storia Dictionary™ defines and pronounces any word readers highlight. This customized, age-appropriate dictionary is embedded right into each story.
    • Storia allows parents to monitor their children’s progress, see what new words they learned, how many pages they read, and how many minutes they spent reading each day. Parents can set up individual bookshelves for each of their children and purchase new eBooks.
    • Storia comes with FIVE free eBooks.
    • Storia rewards teachers. Parents who already participate in Scholastic Book Clubs can earn rewards for their child’s teacher with eBook purchases, which can be redeemed for more books and classroom supplies.
    • Storia caters to the reading needs and levels of each child, providing age-appropriate featuresthat help develop reading enjoyment and proficiency. Parents never have to worry about their child accessing content outside the app or purchasing books without their knowledge.

The library is in full swing and our Accelerated Reader program is up and running at SCES. Students have access to over 100,000 AR tests on the Accelerated Reader Enterprise system. The AR system is web-based which means as long as there is internet at SCES, AR will be up and running.

Students are encouraged to read, read, and read! The top reader in each classroom will be treated with a special prize!

Our students are being STAR tested now and will have a new*reading zone* or ZPD. Students should be reading books in their reading zone. Ask your child what his/her reading level is. If they do not know, please call me here at school and I will send you a full STAR report on your child. Please encourage your child/children to read. If a child can read, they will excel in school. If you have any motivational ideas, please share them with your child*s teacher or with me. Please call or visit as we are always open to new and innovative ideas and suggestions for making our students exceptional readers.
